The Possum room caters for children aged 2 years to 3 years old. The maximum number of children on a day to day basis is 20 and the educator to child ratio is 1 educator to 5 children. The staff comprise of a diploma qualified team leader. As well as 2 to 3 other permanent staff members.
On Wednesdays and Thursdays and for a half day every second Friday during school term the Possums and Kangaroos are combined in the Possum room. This is due to the Strathalbyn Outreach Kindergarten offering a 4 year old Kindergarten program in the Kangaroo room. During this time a maximum of 30 children can attend. On these days the two groups engage in joint experiences and activities, but engage in separate group and meal times.
In the Possum room we have a play based child-led learning program. We see the children in the Possum room as being strong, capable, independent, curious and full of imagination. We encourage children to think, question, investigate, explore and help guide their own learning journey. We encourage individual interest and foster independence by providing the children with the opportunity to make choices, share ideas and develop trusting relationships with Educators and to care about and respect others. We believe the best learning environments inspire, are flexible and are open-ended. Our toddlers spend a lot of time in our outdoor learning environment which they love to explore and investigate.
